Can the two words be synonyms to each other? As for the sentence you made for “overlap”, can we say “overlap words”? What kinds of verbs are often used in this case? Your explanation of “survey” in the two examples is clear. Good job.
I think "cross" is a good synonym of "overlap" as both of them has a meaning of "sharing some part". I thought about "duplicate" after I saw Maki's comment and I don't think it is a good word as synonym as this word has a meaning of "exactly the same" which doesn't match to "overlap". As you taught us in the class, I misunderstood the word "overshadow" as "overlap". Now I understand how it didn't make much sense.
